Paris, France — Three days into competition at the Paralympic Games in Paris, the action is starting to heat up. Many teams are preparing to move past group play, more individual medals are being awarded.

Team USA’s medal count is 19 (five gold, nine silver, five bronze).

It was a rather busy day at Stade de France. Susannah Scaroni kicked it off by taking home silver in the women’s 5000M T54 race. Beatriz Hatz claimed a bronze in the women’s long jump T64 to cap off the morning session. But Team USA was particularly busy at night. Noah Malone’s 10.71 run in the men’s 100M T12 race was good for silver, just .01 seconds off the gold medal pace. Liza Corso snagged bronze in the women’s 1500M T13. Jaydin Blackwell and Ryan Medrano nabbed gold and silver respectively in the men’s 100M T38. Finally, Daniel Romanchuk won gold in the men’s 5000M T54, edging reigning Paralympic champion Marcel Hug.

“It is a huge honor to be able to bring home gold for the USA,” proclaimed Romanchuk. “Records will be broken. Records and stuff like that I view as things to be pushed, not something to be owned.”

In para archery, Tracy Otto won her first matchup in the individual W1 elimination round, defeating China’s Jing Liu 118-113. That set up a showdown with the reigning gold medalist Minyi Chen. Otto saw firsthand why Minyi won gold as she fell 124-107. Otto is back in action Monday in the mixed team W1 event with Jason Tabansky.

The U.S. saw continued success in para swimming Saturday. Olivia Chambers swam a 4:29.93 in the women’s 400M freestyle S13 to nab gold. Two members of Team USA snagged medals in the women’s 200M IM SM7. Julia Gaffney earned bronze with a time of 3:01.27, while Mallory Weggeman’s 2:53.29 not only won gold, it set a Paralympic record.

In men’s goalball, Team USA edged France 5-4 to improve to 1-1 in group play. The U.S. is back in action on Sunday at 1:15 PM France time against Iran. That match will seal where Team USA sits in Pool A ahead of its quarterfinal match on Monday.

The U.S. and the Netherlands played a wheelchair basketball doubleheader today. Team USA boasts the reigning Paralympic champions on the men’s side, the Dutch on the women’s side. That held true today as the U.S. men beat the Netherlands men 60-34, while the Netherlands women beat the U.S. women 69-56.

In wheelchair rugby, Team USA advanced to the semifinal round after knocking off Germany 57-47. The German defense was no match for Chuck Aoki. The now-four-time-Paralympian paced the U.S. with 34 tries.

Ending at Roland-Garros, Maylee Phelps advanced in the first round of women’s singles. But she was the only member of Team USA to have success on the clay surface. Dana Mathewson’s women’s singles loss and David Wagner’s quad singles loss marked the end of their time in Paris. Casey Ratzlaff and Connor Stroud lost in the first round of men’s doubles, but both return for singles on Sunday.
